Jessica Lofthouse was a well known writer of more than 20 books on the Lancashire countryside and its history. She died in 1988 leaving a bequest to provide seats in the countryside for walkers to rest their weary bones. I do not know how many of these seats are scattered around the Ribble Valley but some of them are now sadly warped and overgrown. For a brief account of her life see "Just Jessica" by Alan Duckworth at www.cottontown.org
