This ticket machine is one of 80 which were installed in 1992 at the Metrolink stations and tramstops between Altrincham and Bury; the first phase of the network. This particular machine was installed at the Besses o’ th’ Barn tramstop. It is now in the Bury Transport Museum at Castlecroft. These machines had 24 destination buttons with 5 buttons for ticket type. Originally, 7 buttons were for Metrolink zones and 16 for British Rail zones with one spare. This was changed in April 1993 to give a button for each individual Metrolink station (26 in total at that time) with the remaining 3 buttons for BR zones. These machines remained in service until spring 2010 when, after the network was expanded, they were replaced by the current touchscreen, multi-lingual (and bright yellow!) machines manufactured in Germany.
