With the opening of the Great Central Railway's main line at the end of the 19th century, the sleepy Northamptonshire village of Woodford Halse became a thriving railway centre. Marshalling yards were built and extended until they could accommodate 3,500 wagons. The line closed in 1966 and today this water tower, that once supplied Charwelton water troughs at the north end of the New Yard, is all that remains.
