The "Ice Prince" was wrecked off Devon a few days earlier and lost its deck cargo of 2000 tonnes of timber. A lot of this ended up along the beaches of Sussex. Hence these notices: 'Merchant Shipping Act 1995 It is an offence to keep cargo. Police have been given power by the Receiver of Wreck. You may be arrested and a penalty of £2,500 imposed if you remove Cargo.' and 'Danger beach closed Keep out of the water, loose material floating in the sea'.
