Opened in 1863 by the Metropolitan Railway on the line from Farringdon Street to Paddington Bishop's Road, which was later extended westwards to Hammersmith. A branch line was opened in 1868 southwards from here towards Gloucester Road, which is now part of the Circle, and District lines. Also the Hammersmith & City line uses the original 1863 route. View north at the street-level building, which dates from 1927. The platforms below are in the open air, not tunnel.
