As seen from London Street. Opie Street is named after the Romantic poet, novelist and playwright Amelia Opie whose house, or rather her parents', where she lived after the death of her husband, stands at the eastern end of it, although it has a Castle Meadow address. The white statue seen in mid-distance depicts her > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5871281. Not mentioned in any guidebook is the pre-Victorian era name of this street which was Gropekunte Lane, named after the prostitutes who plied their trade here once upon a time. Also note the plaque > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6448665 between the drain pipe and the door at bottom right, which marks the location where a sedan chair for hire once stood.
