Widows and Bairns Sculpture in Eyemouth

When a severe storm struck south east Scotland on 14th October 1881, 189 fishermen were drowned. Most came from Eyemouth and this left 78 widows and 182 fatherless children. It was Scotland’s worst fishing disaster and became known locally as Black Friday. This bronze sculpture is entitled Widows and Bairns and each figure depicts a real person affected by this tragedy. It was created by Jill Watson and unveiled in October 2016. Other similar bronze sculptures can be found at Cove, St Abbs and Burnmouth.
