A sign outside reads: Glsagow Humane Society Founded 1790 This is the oldest practical life saving society in the world. An officers house and boathouse have been sited in Glasgow Green since 1795. Many thousands of persons owe their lives directly to the Lifeboat Officers and many thousands more to their teachings on safety. The Society is a Charity and is maintained by donations.
