In 1700, the house on this site was known as 'Spittle House' and leased by John and Elizabeth Dinch. In 1755 it was the 'Lazar' and in 1784 it became the 'Hammer and Trowel'. By 1997 it was known as 'Finnegans Wake' and in 2002 it was named 'Trowel and Hammer' > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5865678. The approximate date of the current building dates from the 1859s.
