Historic England records that the hotel was built in 1865 to cater for Great Western Railway passengers arriving at or departing from Millbay station. Pevsner states that this is a fine example of a grand hotel designed in a Baronial Gothic style, clearly influenced by the style chosen for some of the hotels built for the great London termini.
