Originally these pavement lights had been set at the base of an exterior wall to bring some illumination to what were once basement workrooms at the shoe factory of Messrs Howlett and White on St George's Plain, as part of the design of architect Edward Boardman. For a wider view of this location see > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5834732. They were made by St Pancras Ironwork Co based at Old St Pancras Road in London NW and York Road at Kings Cross. In 1868 they advertised their firm as engineers, ironfounders and smiths, selling amongst other items wrought iron and other stable fittings, Scott's Patent glass walls and economical greenhouses. The parking meter also depicted is solar-powered.
