Stephenson’s 'Rocket' on loan to Newcastle's Discovery Museum from the Science Museum Group as part of the Great Exhibition of the North. The Rocket, built by Robert Stephenson at the city’s Stephenson Works Image in 1829, is renowned for being the fastest early steam locomotive at the famous Rainhill trials Image Competing there against rivals in a bid to win a contract to produce locomotives for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the Rocket easily won with an average speed of 12mph and a top speed of 25mph to secure its creator both the contract and a £500 prize. The innovations in the prototype Rocket’s design ensured a more efficient boiler, a fiercer fire to create steam and a re-configured connecting rod system.
