R Roberts (Norwich) Ltd was a shoe factory established in 1926 on this site. For another view, taken from Pottergate, see > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6247705. The firm specialised in children's shows and one of their main lines was the "Doggy Toe" range which had a semi-circular rubber plate with a pattern of small spirals on its sole, resembling a dog's paw, which had been designed to give a better grip. During WW2 they shared Start-rite's Crome Road factory and in 1974 Start-rite purchased all the firm's issued share capital. When Start-rite's Sonnet factory in Duke Street was closed, production was transferred to Fishers Lane and when the Roberts' factory there was closed in 1981, its 100 workers transferred to Start-rite.
