The letterbox in the wall is Victorian. The vicar of the parish in the 1930s had to raise funds for the restoration of the church, first from a state of decay, and then, after the completion of that work, a disastrous fire led to a second wave of fund-raising. Local people complained that his letters of appeal filled the box and left no space for their correspondence
