Sign at the start of the footbridge over Grapes Hill. The building dates from 2006/7 and provides retirement housing; it contains 54 flats. Part of it stands on the site of the Grapes Hotel the Grapes Hotel, which was originally a late Georgian house that had undergone various alterations at different times. During the Baedeker raids of 28/29 April 1942, its upper floors were gutted, but the ground floor was saved and continued in use until a few years after the war, when a new building was constructed on the site, which in turn was replaced in 2006 by yet another. Note the small lead parish marker plate to the right of the first floor balcony > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5829937. It was transferred from the old house and dates from 1811.
