In the foreground, the splendid ornamental fountain (note the finial of an ostrich holding a key from the burgh arms); further back is the 'space rocket' spire of the south kirk and its 'baby brother' on top of Dalrymple Hall. The B-listed fountain from ca. 1870 (LB31970: http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB31970 ) was originally located a couple of hundred metres south at the site of the present war memorial.
