The quarry at Backwell was originally started in 1867 by Joseph Coles. Work proved profitable and the site slowly expanded until the 1960s, when the business was taken over by a number of larger national concerns. That brought a bigger expansion, but the decision was taken on March 31st, 1999, to cease excavations here. Works carried on at the other site but this one was left almost untouched for many years. Wildlife has established a firm foothold now, but the old site is currently being assessed for redevelopment, with car parking and small business units at the fore. The main part of the quarry itself is likely to be given over to a local environment group.
