A view of the floor of Hillhouse Quarry, captured at the ramp onto the production area from the last blasting operation about 1 week previously. Strong, vertical jointing of the rock which is a sill of whinstone, or microgabbro (Carboniferous age) is associated with cooling from the molten state but is not sufficiently perfect to class as "columnar". Hillhouse is the type locality of one of the categories defined by MacGregor in 1928 in his classification of the Carboniferous and Permian igneous rocks from the Midland Valley. This image was captured with the permission and assistance of Hillhouse Quarry Group Ltd.
