The 19th century house which once occupied this space, now a car park for Cathedral staff, burnt down in WW2 as a result of an air raid on 27 June 1942. It had been built on part of the site of the old monastic infirmary and the three massive pillars > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5787957 in the garden in front of this house were the chief visible remains of that earlier edifice. Previously they had been incorporated in a workhouse that was pulled down in 1804. After the war, when the ruins of the house were cleared away, two further pillars were discovered. The house seen in the background is located at 64 The Close.
