An information board near the camera states that White Cliff is composed of brown sandstones and white chalks deposited about 90 million to 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. The cliff's rich fossil content shows that it was deposited in relatively shallow (depth 20 to 100 metres) subtropical seas.
