The Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL), a part of the Natural Environment Research Council, conducts world-class research in: estuary, coastal and shelf sea circulation and ecosystem dynamics wind-wave dynamics and sediment transport global sea level and geodetic oceanography marine technology and operational oceanography. Update: the building shown was demolished in about 2010. The oceanographic work is now carried out by the National Oceanography Centre which is located on the campus of the University of Liverpool www.pol.ac.uk
