Cruden Bay golf course was an important part of the ambitious plans of the Great North of Scotland Railway (The London and North Eastern Railway after 1923) to develop the village as the 'Brighton of the North' and a huge hotel was built to cope with the hoped-for influx of guests. The railway and hotel are long gone but are recalled in some classic railway travel posters; the golf course lives on.
