Towards the end of the 19th Century, the GWR's CME, William Dean, initiated a program to radically upgrade the railway's carriage stock. Using production line techniques, the wooden bodied clerestory (the second roof on top of the first) stock was soundly built, lightweight and comfortable. It rode on special trucks designed by Dean, rather than conventional bogies.
