During the late 19th Century, William Dean, CME of the GWR, developed a range of then-modern wooden-bodied coaches. While he used 8 wheel coaches for the more important trains, for branch line use he stuck to 4 wheel coaches. Here is a typical 4 wheel coach under restoration. The last 4 wheel coaches were built in 1906. The livery is typical for the period, of which the main elements are brown lower sides and ends with cream upper sides, all mouldings picked out in black, drop-light window frames and fixed window bolections in mahogony.
