During the 1930s, the GWR responded to the pressure of increased traffic, freight in particular, with a program to replace its 2-6-0 mixed traffic locomotives with modern more powerful 4-6-0s. The core of this program was the Grange Class. However, to extend the benefits to the more lightly laid lines, a lighter version, the Manor Class, was also developed. Both classes had a characteristic raised footplate over the cylinders, as seen here. Due to World War II, the program was never completed.
