The ofo smart bike was the idea of five students at Beijing university, who founded their bike-sharing company (YellowBike (Beijing) Data Services Co, Ltd) in 2014. The ofo bikes do not require a specified docking station and can therefore be parked anywhere permitted by local law. The bicycle can be activated with a free app which can be downloaded > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5720436. The fee for the use of the bike is 50p per 30 minutes, with a daily maximum cap of £5. The company plans to introduce the ofo bike all over cities around the world. It is currently available in more than 250 cities, spread across 20 countries, and 200 million users are said to have completed 6 billion journeys. Update July 2018: Ofo, which launched in Norwich, its fourth UK location, nine months ago, is planning to remove its 1,000 dockless bikes from the city’s streets over the summer to focus on other key UK markets, specifically London.
