It is believed that developments such as those in Winkles Row, where a plaque on the terrace suggests that it was built by Philip Blyth in 1820, were a progressive step forward from the earlier courtyard developments within the city centre although they still retain many of the characteristics of the earlier form of development such as pedestrian access and high density with a tight built form. JJ Colman owned four cottages here.
