Smaller red brick terraced housing was built by the early 19th century at Carrow Hill, the houses on Ice House Lane, some dwellings on Carrow Hill and in Winkles Row. These houses were presumably constructed for workers in the malting and brewing industry that was prolific in the King Street area, although most of the buildings were later acquired by Colman Ltd for their employees.
