The "missing link" was a 5 mile gap in the M8 motorway between the Glasgow and Edinburgh which was served by the A8 dual carriageway. This situation existed for over thirty years until April 2017 when the motorway link between the country's two biggest cities was completed. Journey times in both directions between the cities were reduced by around 20 minutes as a result of this new road.
