The East Lancashire Paper Mill in Radcliffe was established on 29th March 1860 and was one of the town’s major employers until it closed in 2001. The site of the works has been cleared and few traces remain. These gates and gate pillars which stood at the entrance to the paper mill, have recently been restored relocated to the park at Festival Gardens from their old position on Rectory Lane/Church Street East (see Image]). The two stone gate pillars which have been secured into the ground, are currently surrounded by metal barriers as work progresses to make them into an attractive focal point as part a major renovation of Festival Gardens which being carried out by Bury Council in collaboration with Radcliffe Heritage Society and Radcliffe Rotary Club. Further work, which is expected to take place during May and June 2018, will include replanting all of the flower beds, with landscaping and permanent planting around the ELPM gates (http://www.burytimes.co.uk/news/16201766.East_Lancashire_Paper_Mill_heritage_retained_at_Radcliffe_park/ Bury Times).
