A notable addition to the shopping area of Hemel in environmental terms, restoring a section of river channel to a "natural" state and allowing plenty of extra space for peak flows. If it never sees otters or water voles, it at least represents a move away from the standard approach to treating small rivers at the time Hemel Hempstead New Town was built, which was to confine them in hard-surfaced channels or hide them altogether in culverts.
