This house was built in 1748 to house people with infectious diseases such as smallpox. It is now a private house at 12 Symonds Lane, with many twentieth century changes and additions. In the nineteenth century the lane was known as 'Union Lane' The house has sometimes been known as Red Cottage or Red House, a name that has sometimes been confused with the old Union workhouse further up the lane.
