Preserved class 40 diesel locomotive 40145 hauls an East Lancashire Railway passenger train towards Bury shortly after crossing the Roch Viaduct. Class 40 locomotives https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_40 were among the first diesels to replace steam on the British Rail mainline. The first class 40 locomotive entered service in 1958 (and so the class is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year) and a total of 200 were built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry between 1958 and 1962. This one, 40145, is one of the later ones, first entering service on 17th of May 1961 with BR Eastern Region. Originally carrying the number D345, it was renumbered 40145 under the TOPS system in January 1974. This locomotive was withdrawn from service in June 1983 and was acquired for preservation, arriving at Bury in February 1984. http://www.elrdiesel.info/fleet-40145.php East Lancashire Railway Diesel Group
