A rather optimistic name for what, at the time the photo was taken, is a distinctly grubby disused pub on the corner of Craigmillar Castle Loan and Niddrie Mains Road. It looks as if it might originally have been a cinema. Subsequently, in March 2011 the B-listed building, designed in 1936 by William Innes Thomson, was opened after a £2-million restoration project Image It is hoped it will have a long-term future as a community facility, although the actual use has still to be decided upon. It one of Scotland's last remaining roadhouses, made popular by the motoring boom of the inter-war years. It was an important focal point for the community throughout the post-war period, but had been empty for more than a decade, and its crumbling facade and vandalised interior became synonymous with the area's overall decline.
