Little is currently known about these long vanished licensed premises, which appear to have been situated to the right of the current Post Office/W H Smith outlet. Carrick & Riddell was closed by the State Management Scheme on 20 October 1916. It is known that W H Smith opened in English Street in 1906 and moved to new premises in 1928 (the older building in this view is dated 1926). The "River Island" building is clearly modern and may have been partly built on the site of Old Post Office Court, which was one block to the south-west of the Carrick & Riddell establishment.
