Once one of Morecambe’s finest buildings, but now looking somewhat run-down, the Winter Gardens on Marine Road Central was opened as the “Victoria Pavilion Theatre” in 1896. Its grand red terracotta and brick frontage became something of an iconic landmark in the town as it hosted crowds of more than 2000 in its heyday (http://www.lancashirelife.co.uk/out-about/the-winter-gardens-in-morecambe-is-staging-a-comeback-1-3636397 Lancashire Life). The theatre closed in 1977 and stood empty for years before it was threatened with demolition. An action group was formed and managed to stave off that threat by succeeding in having the theatre designated as a Grade II* listed building (Historic England List entry Number: 1025280 https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1025280 ).
