The dusty road, shared by a public footpath, serves the Whiting Works, sited at a chalk quarry (behind the camera) operated by Omya UK. The company's website explains that there has been a quarry here since 1820, and that its Morden Rock is a very pure form of calcium carbonate used for fillers and in food production. The Melbourn Whiting Company began commercial production of industrial fillers in 1946. Ashwell church tower is on the skyline to the right, in Hertfordshire.
