Inscribed on the base is the text "Puro, J & R Howie, Hurlford, Ayrshire". J & R Howie was founded in 1857; the firm operated an important fireclay works (c.Image), but their product range would become greatly diversified. "Puro" was one of the company's trademarks for their drinking fountains: see https://memorialdrinkingfountains.wordpress.com/tag/j-r-howie-ltd/ (Memorial Drinking Fountains website at Wordpress) for details.
