Starting the Durham to Finchale section of the River Wear in low water

The River Wear downstream of Durham is a classic section for beginners and runs even in fairly low water, though it becomes a bit of a slog and you wouldn't want it much lower than seen here ! It is the site of an annual race on Boxing Day each year, and lots of non-competitors typically follow on later in that day. It can be a cold affair though - sleet has greeted us the last couple of times, and this is not ideal if your beginners are kids or in open boats and not actively paddling. A nice sunny October day was much more to our taste.
