This Clarke, Chapman horizontal duplex steam winch was used by Fred to wind the mine shaft he had built in his garden. It had previously been used by the NCB. The winding house was cramped and tricky to access. I was also careful not to lean against any glass and mindful of the underfoot condition. This was before the auction of the site and viewing was at one's own risk. Getting up close and personal to the winch was one of the reasons for my trip up from the Midlands.
