The road weaves its way along the slopes of the north eastern section of the hills of the Slieve Gullion ring dyke. This is difficult farming country with thin acidic soils and craggy outcrops. The farming economy is based on sheep and dry store cattle rearing. Many of the farmsteads have been amalgamated to make more viable units and their buildings abandoned.
