Above Thames Lock the Grand Union Canal is actually a canalised stretch of the River Brent, so a large weir is required for water to avoid the two locks here. Below the locks the Brent is tidal for a short distance before reaching the Thames. The immediate surroundings are not especially attractive with industrial premises on one side and a large housing estate on the other, but the area is of great interest.
