The statue of William Wallace that now stands on the porch of the Athenæum Image was commissioned by Peter Drummond, a seed merchant and sculpted by Alexander Handyside Ritchie in 1859. It carries the motto "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit", the Latin motto of the Order of the Thistle which translates in English to "No-one provokes me with impunity", or in Scots to "Wha daur meddle wi' me". It is often referred to as the "Wee Wallace" presumably in deference to the one at the Wallace Monument Image
