Northfield House was built circa 1780 for Edward Thompson of Kingston upon Hull. It was subsequently used as a private asylum and, more recently became the University of Hull's first hall of residence, Needler Hall. The approval for the construction of the adjacent Aldi store included the retention and restoration of the original house for residential use. A planning application was submitted in December 2017 to erect two dwellings and a retail/commercial unit following demolition of Needler Hall. This has led to several objections from, inter alia, Historic England and Hull Civic Society. Meanwhile, the building stands dilapidated pending a planning decision by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
