St George's Church Portobello, a former Church of England parish church, is now in use by The University of Sheffield. The church, in Gothic Revival (Perpendicular Gothic) style, was designed by Woodhead and Hurst was consecrated in June 1825. However, it was declared redundant in 1981 and closed. It stood unused for a number of years until the University acquired it and, in 1994, had it converted into a lecture theatre with addional student accommodation. The new Department of Engineering building, nicknamed “The Diamond” is visible in the distance.
