The photograph on this page of 180 years of UMIST by Gerald England as part of the Geograph project.

180 years of UMIST

In one corner of the university campus is a granite monument. The plaque on it reads: This monument was unveiled by Professor John Garside, Vice Chancellor, on the 8 September 2004 to commemorate 180 years of educational excellence at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). It also heralds the beginning of a new era of higher education in this City, with the establishment of The University of Manchester on the 1 October 2004.
