The oldest part of the house dates to 1602 when it was built by Ian Hamilton of Letterick. (The Dukes of Hamilton owned land in this area.) Admiral Sir George Johnston Hope, one of Nelson’s Commanders at Trafalgar, bought it in 1814. Some of his naval prize money went to its purchase. His son, also an admiral inherited the house and it remained in the family till after the First World War. It is now a hotel.
