Wm Greenwood, Providence Mills - steam engine

This horizontal tandem compound mill engine was disused in 1983 but was restored a few years later by Chris Evans and Paul Akrigg. It was then run on occasional open days but is now no longer regularly accessible and hasn't run for many years. It was built as a single cylinder engine by W & J Cardwell of Dewsbury (the only survivor) and compounded by Woodhouse & Mitchell of Brighouse. It is unusual in that it always appears to have run non-condensing. I am not sure if it was on this visit that a group of us ran this engine after the boiler man asked us if we could run it. Fortunately one of our number had considerable experience in preserved stationary engine operation and we managed to safely warm it, oil it and run it for a few minutes.
