This bridge carries the old main line of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, this section of which is now little used; passenger services were reduced in 1993 to three trains each way between Sheffield and Cleethorpes on Saturdays only. Gainsborough Lea Road station, about a quarter of a mile further along Lea Road, is on the line to Lincoln and enjoys a far better service, leaving Gainsborough Central (on this line) as something of a ghost station.
