The sign reads: NO PLEASURE CRAFT BEYOND THIS POINT WITHOUT SEPARATE AUTHORITY A lock allows craft on the Bridgewater Canal to enter the dock and thence the Manchester Ship Canal. One of the few that have regular permission to do so is the Emmeline Pankhurst Image owned by City Centre Cruises https://www.citycentrecruises.com/about-us As can be seen by the state of the footpath on the left the area is something of a wasteland Image There is no pedestrian access to the lock from the dockside.
